Community Based Biodiversity Management - South Asia

Objectives:
To strengthen capacity of farming communities of South Asia conserve, utilize and benefit from their genetic resources through appropriate technical, institutional and policy support.
To increase productivity of biodiversity-based production systems of poor farmers for improved livelihoods and their resilience to climate change.
To enable farming communities to document, conserve and utilize their genetic resources and associated knowledge in a sustainable manner.
To strengthen the capacity of farmers and farming communities, local institutions and other stakeholders for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of genetic resources.
To establish institutional mechanisms to organize, protect farmers’ rights and secure access and control over their genetic resources.
To the analyze implications of existing policies and laws for the conservation of genetic resources and promote supportive policy environment; and
To promote exchange of knowledge, experience and genetic resources among organizations and farming communities of South Asia

The project envisages the producing following outputs during its implementation:
To enable farming communities to document, conserve and utilize their genetic resources and associated knowledge in a sustainable manner;
To strengthen the capacity of farmers and farming communities, local institutions and other stakeholders for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of genetic
To strengthen institutional mechanisms to organize, protect farmers’ right and secure access and control over their genetic resources;
To analyse implication of existing policies and laws for the conservation of genetic resources and promote supportive policy environment promoted; and
To enable the exchange of knowledge, experiences and genetic resources among organisations and farming communities of South Asia
As the nodal head for India, GREEN’s roles include the following: partner scoping and selection, national annual review and planning, joint monitoring and evaluation as well as identifying interventions and developing working mechanisms and proposals.
Specifically, Green Foundation Coordination roles are as follows:
- Review and planning
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Reporting
- Documentation, synthesizing regional experiences, publication and sharing
- Facilitating learning across partner organisations
- Organizing, identifying and making available resource persons
- Organize capacity building activities
- Funding management, including funding to partners
Project areas
Currently, our project areas are spread across 3 agro-climatic zones in Karnataka. These are:
Northern dry zone: Kakamari, Belgaum District
Northern transition zone: Gundenatti, Belgaum District
Hilly zone: Kadkod, Uttara Kannada District
